John Smoltz gave up four first inning runs in his 2009 debut with the Boston Red Sox. In all, Smoltz allowed five runs in five innings of work while getting the loss against the Nationals.

Although he was roughed up a bit in the first, Smoltz settled down giving up a run in the third but retiring the side in order in the second, fourth and fifth.

Smoltz threw just 92 pitches in his first start since June of last year. The Red Sox right-hander is coming off surgery for a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

Even with the loss, the Red Sox were impressed.

“I was excited,” manager Terry Francona said. “I know it was a tough game, but if he throws the ball like that, if he feels like that physically, he’s going to be just fine.”
