After sustaining a shoulder injury on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins have placed Chad Pennington on injured reserve, but they also picked up some insurance for projected new starter Chad Henne.

The Dolphins acquired quarterback Tyler Thigpen from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Thigpen is a third-year veteran and has had more experience as a starter than Henne, having played 14 games last season after Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard went down with season-ending injuries.

Henne went 10-for-19 for 92 yards with an interception after replacing Pennington after the 10-year veteran out of Marshall dislocated his right shoulder Sunday in the third quarter of a 23-13 loss to San Diego.

It might be a long season in Miami for the Dolphins as they are reeling from an 0-3 start after winning the AFC East a season ago. Henne has been considered Pennington’s heir apparent, but this move to starting QB is a lot earlier than Miami expected.
