The New York Mets won the final game of a four game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night and took three out of four from the Cards, even with a depleted line-up.

Johan Santana was struggling early on. He went to 3-0 counts on four of the first 11 batters he faced. That is something he hadn’t done in an entire game in six years.

According to Santana, he went back into the clubhouse and reviewed the tape of his first inning and made some adjustments.

“My fastball,” he said, “was moving all over the place.”

After re-examining his mechanics, Santana emerged victorious over Chris Carpenter in a sparkling match-up of Cy Young Award winners.

Even with Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, John Maine and Oliver Perez all on the disabled list, the Mets some how won the series against the Cardinals and closed within a half-game of the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies.
