Same Old Mets - Bullpen Loses Another Santana Gem

A season ago, a terrible Mets bullpen cost Johan Santana seven potential wins last season. So when New York signed record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez and traded for J.J. Putz all was to be fixed, right?

Not against the Marlins on Wednesday night.

Santana went seven complete innings, giving up just two earned runs off five hit while striking out seven. Things were being set up just as the Mets scripted them, until one-time closer turned set-up man J.J. Putz took the ball in the eighth.

Putz gave up a two-run single to Cody Ross to put the Marlins on top for good 4-3. Putz got the loss after pitching just one inning. He walked two, gave up one hit and two earned runs.

These are the type of games New York expects to be winning this season, after the off-season so-called improvements they made to their bullpen.

It has not worked out that way so far.
