The Boston Redsox used the long-ball to take game one of the weekend series 5-4 against the New York Yankees.

Redsox left fielder Jason Bay blasted a two-run home run to the deepest part of Fenway park off Mariano Rivera with two outs in the bottom half of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. With on swing, Bay connected and cleared the 37-foot-high Green Monster above the 379-foot marker off the games best reliever.

Then, just two inning later first baseman Kevin Youkilis hit a long ball of his own to win the game for the boys from Beantown, giving the Redsox their eight win in a row.

Boston’s Ramon Ramirez got the win after throwing a scoreless eleventh inning. Starter Jon Lester got a no-decision after going six inning and allowing two runs off seven hits.

Yankees reliever Damaso Marte recorded the loss for New York.

The Redsox and Yankees face-off for game two of the series Saturday afternoon at Fenway.
