According to Major League Baseball sources, right-handed pitcher Brad Penny cleared waivers on Monday and will be signing with the San Francisco Giants.
At age 31, Penny has a lifetime record of 101-83. He was 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA with the Red Sox this season.
After the Red Sox signed him to a one-year $5 million deal this past winter, Penny will make a prorated minimum salary with the Giants, and is should be joining their rotation, replacing Joe Martinez.
With Randy Johnson injured, Penny provides the Giants with another solid starter to join reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito and Jonathan Sanchez.
