In an effort to boast revenue in the state’s struggling casino business, the New Jersey Legislature is considering letting casino’s and race tracks take bets on sporting events.

Bettors in the Garden State would almost certainly love to take their sports wagering out of the darkness and bring it into the light with legalization.

As great as this would be for hard-core sports bettors, the state still has to get over some serious obstacles before any bets can be taken.

First, voters must amend the New Jersey Constitution to permit such wagering, but that is not to most difficult hurtle.

The state would also need a legal victory in a federal lawsuit filed last year by a state senator that seeks to overturn a federal ban on sports betting in New Jersey and 45 other states.
