Commissioner Bud Selig says that he is pleased that Mark McGwire is returning to Major League Baseball.

McGwire has been hired by manager Tony LaRussa to be the hitting coach with the St. Louis Cardinals, even though it has been speculated that McGwire is linked to performance-enhancing drug use.

“I am delighted that Mark’s coming back to the game,” said Selig. “I have no misgivings about this at all. Mark McGwire is a very, very fine man and the Cardinals are to be applauded.”

McGwire has mostly stayed out of the public eye since he retired following the 2001 season. He was fingered by former Oakland Athletics teammate Jose Canseco, in Canseco’s book “Juiced,” as having used performance-enhancing drugs.

McGwire famously refused to answer questions about steroid use during a March 2005 congressional hearing, saying he wasn’t there to talk about the past.

I think this is great thing for baseball. McGwire and Sammy Sosa captured all of our hearts in the magical summer of 1998 when he broke the regular season record for home runs, hitting 70.
