Germany captain Michael Ballack will miss the World Cup because of torn ligaments in his right ankle. That is a serious blow to the three-time champions less than a month before the tournament.
Ballack was injured on a hard tackle by Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, who was provisionally selected for Ghana’s World Cup squad.
Germany coach Joachim Loew called the tackle by Boateng “brutal.” Ballack said the foul might have been intentional because the two scuffled shortly before the foul.
Loew’s squad opens World Cup play against Australia and then plays Serbia and Ghana in Group D.
Germany is now without their most experienced player and captain on a team with many young players.
Most won’t give Germany much of a chance.
