With no one seeming to want to take control of the NL East lately, the Philadelphia Phillies to a step in the right direction on Sunday.
Chase Utley hit a two-run triple, Jamie Moyer won back-to-back starts for the first time in more than two months and Brad Lidge record his 14th save of the season, first since coming off the DL.
The Phillies held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in the rubber match of the series.
Activated off the disabled on Friday, after being out since June 9 with a sprained right knee, Lidge was tested early when he had to move quickly on a bunt from Blue Jays catcher Raul Chavez to begin the ninth. Chavez reached safely when Lidge’s throw pulled Ryan Howard off the bag.
It would be the only hit Lidge would allow as he pitched a scoreless ninth.
“They probably know why I came off the DL and they tried to test it,” Lidge said.
He passed with flying colors as the Phillies got the win and took a 2 1/2 game lead on the New York Mets in the NL East.
