John Smoltz’s brief career with the Boston Red Sox is now over.
Smoltz has refused the option of an assignment to the minor leagues, that leaves the Red Sox with a decision to make. Either trading him or releasing him.
Trade for the 42 year old pitcher is definitely possible. Smoltz has cleared waivers and it looks like the Los Angeles Dodgers may be showing some interest in the former All-Star.
According to Smoltz’s current contract, he receives about $35,000 for each day he is on the active roster. Smoltz also receives a $500,000 bonus if he is on the active roster and not the disabled list on the last day of the season and a $500,000 bonus if he is traded.
In eight starts this year, Smoltz is 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA.
