Irish Won’t Be Worrying About Scoring Too Fast

Under former head coach Charlie Weis, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish often talked about the need to play complementary football, depending on the offense to keep the ball away from opponents to take some pressure off their defense.
With Brian Kelly at the helm, the Irish won’t be worrying about that.
Offensive coordinator Charley Molnar says that the Notre Dame offense can’t concern themselves with that kind of thinking.
“The defense is going to do what the defense is going to do,” he said. “If we score fast and it’s three and out and then we get the ball, hopefully we can score fast again. That’s the idea.”
Under Kelly, the Cincinnati Bearcats leaned on a quick-strike offense that was dead last in the nation in time of possession in 2009, holding the ball for an average of a little over 25 minutes per game.
Despite that stat, the 12-1 Bearcats were fourth in the nation in scoring at 38.6 points a game.
