Just a day and a half after the Red Sox and Mets finalized the trade for Billy Wagner, maybe Boston didn’t need to make the move after all.

After starting pitcher Junichi Tazawa was roughed up for nine runs in just four innings of work, Red Sox manager Terry Francona need some help from his bull-pen to finish the game. However, Wagner had a bullpen session Thursday and was unavailable.

So Francona called on Short-Stop Nick Green to take the mound to save the pen.

“I didn’t really want to do it, but I understood the situation,” said Green. “That’s why I said, ‘OK, I’ll go out there and try to have fun.’”

Green fired a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to mop up the Red Sox’s 9-5 loss to the White Sox.
