According to reports out of Los Angeles, with the season right around the corner negotiations between the Dodgers and free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez have become more often and longer in duration.

The biggest issue to date has been concerns about the length of the deal. Ramirez wants a four-year contract for in the neighborhood of $25 million per year. The Dodgers seem to agree on the $25 million per year, but have offered one and two-year deals with options for a third.

The San Francisco Giants have been the only other team to show any kind of interest in Ramirez, but they have no desire to get into a bidding war with the Dodgers.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre has said that he hopes to see Manny playing left field for him this season. Los Angeles is reportedly even saving a locker spot for Ramirez.

This is just another case of “Manny being Manny” and it finally catching up with him.

Manny Ramirez is a great player, but he not the kind of guy any team should sign a long-term deal with. He plays well only when he wants to and has shown to lose interest with teams the longer he stays with them. Now this is no secret and teams are not stupid.
