Derby Favorite Lookin At Lucky Not So Lucky

Lookin At Lucky was far from lucky at the Kentucky Derby post position draw this week at Churchill Downs.

The Triple Crown hopeful has drawn the inside post, the spot widely considered not to be a highly advantageous starting position against 20 horse field.

Even with the unfavorable draw, odds makers are still calling Lookin at Lucky the favorite in this year’s 136th Run for the Roses. With the race set for Saturday, May 1st, Lookin at Lucky is currently at 3/1.

Another California three year old, Santa Anita Derby winner Sidney’s Candy, was installed at 5/1. Sidney’s Candy drew the 20th post and will start from the far outside.

The post position draw was determined by a traditional “pill pull,” in contrast to previous years when horsemen selected posts after having their order of selection determined by lot.

Even with bad weather in the forecast, Churchill Downs is expected to be pack with more than 100,000 race fans on Saturday.

The National Weather Service is calling for about a 60 percent chance of rain on Saturday, with an accumulation of 1 to 2 inches.
