The Denver Broncos and new coach Josh McDaniels were extremely active on the first day of free agency. They went straight to Philadelphia to fill some key roster spots.

The Broncos signed former Eagles seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins and beefed up their backfield with the signing of running back Correll Buckhalter.

Dawkins spent 13 years in Philadelphia and will turns 36 in the up-coming season. The Broncos are obviously looking for veteran leadership on defense and McDaniels reportedly loves Dawkins’ hard hitting style in the secondary.

Buckhalter, a 2001 fourth-round pick, joins the Broncos after serving as a backup to Philadelphia’s Brian Westbrook. Despite missing three seasons with knee injuries (2002, 2004-05), the 30-year-old played in 14 games in each of the past two seasons and did an excellent job filling in for the injury-prone Westbrook.

According to league sources, Dawkins deal is for five-year and is to be worth about $17 million. Buckhalter signed a four-year deal.
